Presenting my thesis project, Native Thumbs! Click ‘more’ to see a bunch of photos of the entire project!
Native Thumbs is a collection of mini-comics that I completed during my final year at CCS. I constructed boxes out of the backs of sketchbooks (donated by my awesome classmates) and then created a lid using sturdy cover-stock. When you open the box, you find an assortment of mini-comics! The bottom of the lid has the “Cable of Tontents,” which is arranged by the size of the mini-comic:

First up is the teeny-mini, “Stars,” which you can read in its entirety here.

Standing a few inches taller is my sketchbook/collage-mini that we’ll type out as “eeee” or “lllll.” I’ll post about how I made this in the future, it was lots of fun.

More Man’s Walkin’, my collection of color one-page comic strips, most of which have appeared online:

Coming in at #4 is Colita de Rana! I’m shopping this Children’s Book around at the moment, but here are some sneaky peakies…

I also included the second issue of my personal anthology, Polite Fiction, most of which you can read online:

Next up, First Flower! Which appears in the anthology, Future, but for my thesis, I drew each cover by hand…

Here they all are, spread out:

And finally, a tear-sheet of my comic, The Cannibal, originally appearing in Caboose:

I strangely had a great time creating these boxes! I’m so happy with the final product, and I’m glad I’m a graduate of the Center for Cartoon Studies, 2010!

That is one sweet collection of comics. You should think about selling it or coming up with a comic collection that would be contained in a sweet box like that one. I would totally buy it!
I want a set also! Great job *_+
this looks awesome. i love that frog cover.
Hey, thanks for the comment over on my blog. I love your grease pencil drawings.
Thanks for the comments—all of you are great artists! I may end up selling a version of the boxes soon…and definitely the comics contained inside
Awesome!!!
Nice! I didn’t get a chance to see your thesis back in May.
What a great way to package mini comics! The forest drawings on the box are really fantastic.
Caboose! I have that comic! I got it on free comic book day at Newbury’s in West Leb. You guys did an awesome job on it.
